Dear Polly,

My son is getting married and the bride’s parents are paying for the wedding. I was told I could invite 50 guests and assumed that meant 50 couples. The bride’s mother hit the ceiling as it was 100 guests all up and suggested I pay for the extra people. I simply cannot afford to and as it is my only son’s wedding, I feel I am entitled to invite who I would like to be there. Another suggestion is to only invite siblings, but my son is an only child and the bride is one of six! Help!

Mum

A car was parked [   ] our driveway.

I breathed [   ] the smoky bacon air that drifted to the door as I opened it. I swallowed the saliva that trickled into my mouth. I thought hard not to be hungry, but the baby [   ] me controlled the thinking in the hungry part of my brain. Lionel was there and two [   ] his mates were [   ] him.

They sat [   ] the table. The pot [   ] bones was [   ] the centre. The three [   ] them tore at the flesh and ripped it [   ] the bones with their teeth, then they sucked at those bones and licked their greasy fingers. Bacon juice and grease ran [   ] [   ] their bulging mouths and soaked [   ] their already stained tee-shirts, adding more stains [   ] the rest of the bits of filth [   ] them. The pot was empty. Only the water remained.

Assignment 2

Lyt til podcasten, og skriv eksempler på følgende ordklasser i nedenstående lydklip.

  • 5 adjektiver (tillægsord)
  • 5 adverbier (biord)
  • 5 substantiver (navneord)
  • 5 verber (udsagnsord)
In the podcast from BBC website, broadcaster Lucy Cooke interviews professor Steve Jones about the idea of cuteness.

Assignment 1

Find alle verberne (udsagnsordene) i præteritum (datid) i nedenstående tekst, og omskriv dem til præsens (nutid). Skriv hele teksten som dit svar, og markér verberne (udsagnsordene) tydeligt som i eksemplet.

Eksempel: Silas was more careful...

Silas is more careful...

Silas was more careful the next time. He performed his rite farther from the house, deeper in the avenues of the grove. […] That night, after finding his son’s bed empty, James went out into the grove like a fury, calling the boy’s name. It seemed for a while that Silas would remain in the cold, waiting out his father. James continued to call – assuring the boy that he would wait for him all night and all morning, for as long as Silas liked – and after several minutes Silas appeared, again completely nude, summoned from the trees like a ghost. It was late November, and the breath from the two bodies, one clothed and one bare, one breathing heavily from exertion and the other from pain, poured out in thick clouds that hung around them and slowly dissipated. The switch went to work again on the boy's legs and back. This time it moved faster than before, fast enough to open the skin where it was most tender, behind the knees, across the lower back. It was the last time Silas went running in the grove undressed, and they never mentioned it again as a family.

James understood that night that his son was something he would never completely comprehend. There were, of course, some things in the boy that reminded James of himself, his willfulness especially. But there was another side, he realized, a hemisphere waxed always away from him, the tidal clock of an unlit landscape he couldn’t map or reckon with.
